Fruit Profile- Agbalumo


African star apple commonly known as agbalumo, Cherry or Udala/ Udara in Nigeria. I remember using the seeds for local games- Ayo, and chewing the skin so hard until it turned to gum.

It has bright orange colour with edible skin and dark brown seeds covered with creamy pulp. The sweet fruits are not usually harvested from trees but are picked when naturally dropped.
Botanically called chrysophyllum albidum. It is very common during the months of December to April.

It has anti-oxidant properties that help fight against cancer
It contain more Vitamins A and C
Richness in calcium, Iron potassium,phosphorous, magnesium,tannin,flavonoids,terpenoids,and phytochemicals.
It lower blood sugar and cholesterol, and could be useful in preventing and treating heart diseases
